Second grade artists recently finished a complementary color study where they chose an animal to draw, complete with a background to help tell the story of their animal. Part of the challenge was to only use two colors, a pair of complementary colors to really make the artwork "POP!", in a way that only complementary colors can do. They had to mix their paints with black and white, so that while they were only using two colors, they had many shades, or values to work with to help create more contrast and visual interest. Here are a few examples.
